Making Money While Living on a Boat
“How will you make money?”
Perhaps the number one question we get.
The short answer:
We will both still work from home (boat).
Starting out, Brian will continue to be a software developer at Knock and Rachel will continue to run her photography business.
Eventually, we hope to travel to other countries, (this will take some time) and what will we do then you might ask?
To be honest, we don’t know exactly.
What we do know, is we both feel that we have enough skills between the two of us, to figure it out as we go.
Our skills could give us jobs that look like Brian taking on mechanical work in the boatyard, or Rachel making websites for local businesses. …Five years ago, we never thought we’d be where we are now, so WHO the heck knows where we’ll be in another 5 years??? (Which excites us!)
We’re not afraid to take on contract jobs as needed, or even take a break from cruising (if needed) to continue to fund this dream. Overall, we’re just confident that things will work out exactly how they’re supposed to.
Sidenote: We will also have rental income from our duplex and we might do some stock market trading too.
“Ok. But how will you have internet for your jobs?”
While at our marina…
We have cable internet connecting directly to our boat. —We lucked out because this isn’t always available.
It has the same up/down speeds as our land-home.
While we’re away from the marina / at anchor…
We have a T-mobile mobile hot spot (Mifi) and a small antenna. The hotspot device gets unlimited 4G.
While we’re out in the middle of the ocean…
This isn’t happening for at least a few years, but we have our eyes on Starlink!!! (satellite internet)
Elon Musk with SpaceX have been working hard to get affordable, reliable, satellite internet across the world, including some of the most remote places around the globe…. including in the middle of the ocean.
Starlink is currently (April 2021) available in some locations in the northern US. It will become more and more available nationwide and they hope to make it possible to use their internet while moving between locations. ie: on a boat
So that’s it… that’s our plan as of now.
Maybe it’ll change, and we’ll somehow win the lottery and won’t have to work.
Haha, but until then, we’ll keep doin what we’re doin.
Cheers, Friends!
